Ruby Engineer

Role:

You'll be working on our flagship Ruby/Rails platform at the heart of our business. It exposes structured JSON data via a RESTful API on top of a MongoDB-powered document store.

Your challenge is to help us maintain a scalable, performant and feature-rich application by leveraging the best tools and practices. We want your input on new features, integration with third-party services and the creative direction of our products.

Responsibilities:
  • Crafting clean, elegant Ruby code
  • Practicing test-driven development with regular git commits
  • Laser focus on getting tasks done by using the best tools for the job
  • Perform peer code reviews and work closely with other team members
  • Experiment! We love new technologies and methodologies that help us work smarter
  • Provide creative input into the direction of the product
You Must:
  • Have at least one year of solid development experience.
  • Have a strong, demonstrable portfolio that you are proud of.

In A Typical Day You:
  • Pushed the latest commit in a new feature-branch you've been working on to allow for user-generated search filters in the UI
  • Tweaked your ~/.bash_profile so you can see git branch names in the command line - it saves runing 'git branch'
  • Established a new caching strategy to dramatically improve search performance and proudly shared your findings with the team
  • Worked on a new automation script for our chat room robot to speed up the deploy workflow
  • Agreed with the team on the best third-party text message provider so our users can send/receive text messages from within app
  • Finished work on a new gem you've been building for logging database activity. You and the team agree to open-source it and give back to the community
Bonus Points For:
  • Having an active Github profile
  • Open source contributions
  • Previous experience in building a RESTful API
  • Experience with MongoDB

Cappuccino & Objective-J Developer

Role:

You’ll be the lead Cappuccino developer mostly working on the user-facing parts of our web app. Mostly. There will be the opportunity to flex your iOS muscles too!

You’ll need a keen eye for design also, and a knack for making mockups come to life in the browser.

It’s essential that you care deeply about how users interact with your software and you are passionate about making apps that people simply love to use.

Responsibilities:
  • Write excellent Objective-J / Objective-C code.
  • Be proficient in Javascript and prepared to drop down into the DOM where required.
  • Understand our RESTful API endpoints and how best to use them in the client app.
  • Work closely with the rest of the development team.
  • Help us push the boundaries of what is possible in the browser.
  • Have creative input into the functionality and usability of our software.
  • Enjoy user interaction design and implement user feedback in your work.
You Must:
  • Have at least one year of solid development experience.
  • Have a strong, demonstrable portfolio that you are proud of.
  • Be passionate about startup culture - if you expect a 9-to-5, stop reading now.
In A Typical Day You:
  • Finished building your Cappuccino wrapper for PDF.js, and open-sourced it.
  • Implemented the new Lion style scrolling app-wide.
  • Read some interesting articles on Hacker News and discovered a great new JavaScript graphics library you could make use of in our app.
  • Worked on integrating some of the new Cappuccino CoreText functionality to create some really nice text editing features.
  • Ported the latest changes from master branch to the iOS version of our app.
  • Accepted some pull requests from the team and deployed to production.
  • Refactored some code to make it run twice as fast as before.
Bonus Points For:
  • Having an active Github profile
  • Open source contributions
  • Having some iOS experience (an app in the App Store = double bonus points!)
  • Experience with MongoDB

UI/UX Designer

Role:

You’ll be responsible for making our user experience insanely great.

This will involve both the visual and interaction design to ensure information is well presented and highly accessible to our users.

We care deeply about human-oriented design that is so good, it’s invisible - so should you!

Responsibilities:
  • Write awesome HTML/Javascript/CSS.
  • Wireframe and mockup new UI/UX designs.
  • Use cutting edge Javascript frameworks and libraries to glue everything together.
  • To err on the side of simplicity and make sure this translates to our products.
  • Work with visual design talent to ensure our app looks fantastic.
  • Understand user journeys, funnels and visitor metrics and analyse the data.
  • Know how to prevent an over-engineered solution to a problem that doesn’t exist.
You Must:
  • Have at least one year of solid development experience.
  • Have a strong, demonstrable portfolio that you are proud of.
  • Be passionate about startup culture - if you expect a 9-to-5, stop reading now.
In A Typical Day You:
  • Checked Dribbble for nice UI designs and bookmarked a few inspiring examples.
  • Worked on some mockups for our latest release - you’re particularly proud of the layout of a calendar view you’ve hand-crafted.
  • After some experimenting, you convinced the rest of the team to use CoffeeScript, because it’s more elegant than vanilla Javascript.
  • Issued a pull request for a new date picker element you’ve been working on.
  • Optimised performance of a data heavy table view - it work’s great, even with thousands of rows!
  • Read about the new selectors proposed for CSS4.
  • Finished making our website design fluid so it looks great at any resolution. Deployed your changes to production.
  • Looked at the results of some user testing you initiated last week and discussed with the team how we can improve the app.
Bonus Points For:
  • Dribbbling
  • Having an active Github profile
  • Being pretty dangerous with Photoshop/Illustrator
